First day of tech! It’s crazy to write this journal because in so many ways it feels like we just began–we moved in less than a month ago and now we’re less than a week from opening night. The first night of tech is always a flurry of emotions for me. In some ways it doesn’t feel real because oftentimes (like tonight) we haven’t added costumes yet, so there are aspects that feel no different from a typical rehearsal, but then there’s also the reactions of people who are seeing this live for the first time. Even though it’s only designers who are new to our rehearsals, it changes it so much to even have someone sitting in the seats and reacting to lines we say. Tech is also always a hard thing to move into for me because while it’s still rehearsal and it’s still a place to come in and show my work and try new things, it’s not about that anymore. Tech is when the other aspects of the show blend with what we’ve been working on and really pull everything together. Because this show has significantly less technical elements than previous shows (particularly Murder on the Orient Express and Curious Incident) there is still more work that is being done than there has been in previous shows where we almost entirely hand it over to the designers so this is still much more like a standard rehearsal than tech has been in the past.
