Today we started blocking the show and one of the things I have quickly realized is that this show is going to be a lot more blocking heavy than I initially thought. Because a vast majority of the cast is onstage for the entirety of the piece and we are all sitting for most of it, I hadn’t anticipated just how much work on the details there would be. Entrances and exits will be easier by nature, but there are limitless moments to craft and hone in on to help the show come together. This includes points of view to other people talking and making sure that moments are not upstaged from other actors. I also hadn’t fully thought about the level of intricacy that goes into not making this a boring show where we all just sit the entire time and are able to deal with sight lines because of the nature of the scenic design. I, of course, hadn’t thought I would just get to tune out when I’m not talking, but I don’t think I had fully internalized how much attention would have to be paid to each line and each detail of this show. It makes me more excited to work on the show because it will help to develop the character more, which I talked about being nervous about in a previous journal, but I am also nervous about having to react to everything and stay engaged without much of a break in the show.
