Today we had design presentations and it has both reinforced the ways that I have been thinking of my character and shifted the ways that I have conceptualized my actions and motivations. The costume is very neat and put together, which does track with my conceptualization of the character to be of a higher class status and is very focused on what he is doing. One of the things that the costume rendering brought to light was that the costume seems a lot meaner than I was thinking of my character. It makes sense, especially given what I wrote about last night with my character being incredibly focused and matter-of-fact about the whole situation, but I hadn’t considered how this might have carried into the costume. Additionally, my character has a union pin on the lapel of his jacket, which gives me another thing to research about my character. I’ve been assuming that he’s well off enough, but my current conception of union jobs is that they tend to be blue collar. So, I’ll have to do more research about what unions existed in the 1950’s as well as the jobs, pay, class, etc. that were associated with these unions. The thing that really stood out to me the most about my costume was the glasses I am wearing for the show. They are a style that I think will make me look meaner and harder based on my face shape and the way I know this style will look on me. This makes me really excited to move further in the process and get costumes and I think it will help me unlock more about my character and growth throughout the play.
